Part 22: Understanding Spiritual Gifts

Apr 19, 2026    Matt Rummage

This message from 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 aims to provide a biblical understanding of spiritual gifts. The text gives the Church five key insights that enable us to do just that. We're reminded that spiritual gifts aren't trophies to collect or emotional experiences to chase—they're expressions of the Spirit's sovereign grace given specifically for building up the body of Christ. Each gift flows from the same source: God Himself. These gifts aren't earned but given by grace, and they're given to each one of us without exception. The purpose? To profit others eternally, to build them up, encourage them forward in faith, and bring comfort into their lives. We're challenged to examine whether our lives are truly spiritual or merely carnal, whether we're focused on Christ or consumed with ourselves, and whether we're willing to humble ourselves and admit when we've been too distracted or apathetic to fulfill our calling as members of Christ's body.
