Part 19: Understanding Spiritual Gifts

Mar 1, 2026    Matt Rummage

In this powerful exploration of 1 Corinthians 12, we discover what it truly means to be a spiritual church operating in the power of the Holy Spirit. The church at Corinth was confused about spiritual gifts so they have asked Paul to clear things up for them. This passage (12:1-11) gives the church the understanding we need about spiritual gifts.  We learn that the primary work of the Holy Spirit is always to exalt Jesus Christ as the Lord and the Messiah. This becomes our litmus test for discerning authentic spiritual activity. If any ministry, experience, or gathering does not magnify Jesus, it is not of the Spirit. The text emphasizes that spiritual gifts are grace gifts, meaning we cannot earn them, buy them, or achieve them through education or personal holiness. They are supernatural endowments distributed by God himself for one central purpose: the edification and building up of the entire body of Christ. Every single believer receives the opportunity to participate in the spiritual gifts. Not for personal glory or private experience, but for the profit (edification) of all. This transforms how we view ourselves and others in the church. No one is excluded from being used by God. We are diverse pieces of a puzzle that, when exercised in humility, create a beautiful representation of God's family united around Jesus.
