Killing the Ungodly Tongue

Aug 2, 2026    Matt Rummage

What if the real problem with the words we speak has nothing to do with our mouths at all? That is the provocative question at the heart of this message on killing the ungodly tongue. Drawing from James chapter 3, we are confronted with the sobering reality that the tongue, though small, carries the destructive potential of a wildfire. But rather than stopping there and handing us a list of rules to follow, the message takes us somewhere far more searching: straight to the condition of our hearts. Jesus himself, in Matthew 12 and Luke 6, repeats the same striking truth more than once, that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. Our words are not the root problem. They are the fruit of whatever is growing beneath the surface. This means that every careless word, every burst of anger, every whispered piece of gossip is quietly telling a story about what we truly treasure and worship. The invitation here is not to try harder to clean up our speech, but to honestly examine what our words are revealing about the deeper state of our souls. It is a message that challenges us to stop treating symptoms and start addressing the source.
