Part 4: New Perspective on Adversity

What if the hardest seasons of our lives are not punishments or signs of God's absence, but rather invitations into something deeper? Romans 5 lays out a chain reaction that begins in an unexpected place: tribulation. The word itself means pressure, squeezing, crushing. It describes those moments when everything feels like it is closing in. And yet, right there in the middle of that kind of language, we find the call to rejoice. Not because the pain feels good, but because we know what it is producing. Tribulation produces perseverance, which means single-mindedness, the God-given ability to stay focused on what truly matters and to remain under pressure without giving up. Perseverance then produces character, a tested quality of confidence that only comes from having walked through something hard and come out on the other side. And character produces hope, not the uncertain, fingers-crossed kind of hope we use in everyday conversation, but an absolute certainty rooted in the faithfulness and sovereignty of God. This is the chain reaction God sets in motion every time we face difficulty. The message is clear: suffering is not working against us. It is working for us.
